On February 13th, celebrities, singers, and civilians alike all gathered together at St. Paul the Apostle Church to commemorate the life of Nelson Mandela. The tribute, organized by NYC arts club CultureHorde and The Nelson Mandela Foundation, was hosted by Morgan Freeman and South African DJ Gareth Cliff. Cliff offered up some particularly poignant remarks regarding the nature of the former South African president, referring to him as, “Not only the greatest South African of our time, but a person whose life personifies what it means to be a true global citizen. He’s been the glue that has kept South Africa together: in many senses, tonight, he unites us again, even in his death.” Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir performed a selection of soulful songs, from traditional hymns to pieces specifically inspired by Madiba himself.
Despite the chilly weather and icy snow which swirled outside the church windows that night, nothing could freeze the love shared between the people inside for one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.
